Abstract

The Redfern Park Speech and The Apology Keating referred to the establishment of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) and the creation of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation as ways ahead for Australia and Australians to "commit ourselves to achieving concrete results" in terms of justice and equity (Keating 1992: 2). [...] because: there was a formal apology to the stolen generations, their families and communities on behalf of the Commonwealth Government and the Australian Parliament; Recommendation 5a of the Bringing them Home report was recognised and realised; the impact of the laws, policies and practices that had created the stolen generations were recognised; and, for some people, what happened to them was validated and they could move on and really focus on their healing. [...] I have come to understand and know some of what my grandpa felt and some of what he experienced.
