The historical information about the Black Death and the Middle Ages complements Cushman's The Midwife's Apprentice, while the section on smallpox will help readers of the Adams biography better understand Abigail's decision in 1776 to take her children, ranging in age from three to eleven, to her Uncle Isaac and Aunt Elizabeth's house in Boston where they were purposely infected with the disease.
