Abstract

Cates became the first chief of the Abortion Surveillance Branch of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just after the landmark 1973 Roe versus Wade Supreme Court decision. "Ward Cates had special gifts as a mentor to aspiring researchers and investigators", says Chris Beyrer, Professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and President of the International AIDS Society.
