W/Creative Black Book alumna Miller became Hearst Magazines' first female publisher in 1985, when since-retired HM president Gil Maurer promoted her to HB from Town & Country ad director. Three years later, she was dismissed in a controversial and unpopular move by then-HM executive vp George Green (min, November 9, 1988), who has become far more popular since as Hearst Magazines International president. Suffice it to say, a slew of Miller HB successors--led by Laura Riordan, who had zero magazine experience--quickly marched in and out--and business did not really turn around until now-Gruner + Jahr USA Publishing consultant Cindy Spengler took over in 1996 (David Arnold succeeded her in 1999). As for Miller, she launched the Martha Stewart Weddings spinoff as a one-shot in 1994, and nurtured it as a "consultant" to its present quarterly frequency. Last Tuesday's (May 1) publisher announcement was pro forma.
