TaxBrain.com was launched in January. "The site was designed for the consumer market and we're right up there with H&R Block and Turbo Tax for the Web," says Charles Petz, director of tax product development.
TaxBrain.com allows users to file their returns from any computer connected to the Web. There is no need to download and install custom software. All a user needs is a browser to prepare a return in minutes. Plus, consumers will receive their federal refund in as little as 10 days.
On-line preparation of federal and state income tax returns cost a flat fee of $24.95, which includes free electronic filing. Customers can choose to pay by credit card, or have the fee deducted from their refund.
Petz is pleased with the response, especially since it did not aggressively market the site. Nonetheless, "we saw over 10,000 hits a day and we have no idea how people found us," he says.
