Rick McCafferty didn't go into the family business.
Many of those working in construction come from families in the trade. McCafferty's first exposure to construction came in high school when a construction company recruiter paid a classroom visit.
"I knew I wanted to go into engineering, and the construction industry seemed like a good fit," recalls McCafferty, executive vice president of Key Construction Inc. "There is a real sense of accomplishment in seeing things built."
Telling students about construction
McCafferty, 38, has made it a priority to encourage others to enter the construction industry, serving on Wichita Public Schools' career implementation board of directors and often mentoring students from his alma mater, Kansas State University.
