In a dispute over an aborted business deal with a for-profit physician company, five top radiation oncologists, including internationally renowned researcher Alvaro Martinez, chairman of the department, said they will leave Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, effective Nov. 1, hospital officials acknowledged.
Crain's confirmed that Frank Vicini, chief of oncology services, also has announced he will quit his job and resign from the medical staff at Beaumont.
Two other radiation oncologists who resigned from Beaumont's 13-member department are J. Vito Antonucci and Michel Ghilezan. The name of the fifth physician could not be confirmed. All were under hospital employment contracts.
"We have five radiation oncology physicians leaving Beaumont to pursue other opportunities," said Colette Stimmell, Beaumont's director of corporate communications. "We have a large department that remains very strong with a committed team of radiation oncologists, biologists and nurses."
