SOUTH CHARLESTON - Fresh out of college in 2002, Sylvia Tang opened a Japanese-Chinese restaurant in South Charleston.
Tang and her partners have expanded from their first Taste of Asia restaurant to Liberty Square in Teays Valley and downtown Huntington near Big Sandy Superstore Arena.
"We looked at the market, and there were no Japanese-Chinese restaurants here at the time," said Tang, now 30 years old, reflecting on Taste of Asia's startup near the mound in South Charleston.
Tang, who formerly lived in Maryland, grew up in a restaurant family. She arrived in West Virginia in 2000 to attend college and earn a business degree. Her partner in Taste of Asia, Michael Cheng, had been in the restaurant business for more than 20 years in Maryland, she said.
