CLARKSBURG - The Wonder Bar has evolved several times during its history but its owners work to maintain the restaurant's spirit, which has made it a Harrison County favorite.
Five years ago, the piece of Route 50 leading to the restaurant became Wonder Bar Road, even.
"We try to be very friendly," said Mickey Cherubino, who owns the restaurant with his wife, Deborah. "There are so many chain restaurants around, it's hard to find a close-knit family like we have here. ... It's about the only familyrun steakhouse in the area."
Despite its name, "this is a supper club, not a bar," Deborah said. "We consider ourselves fine dining."
The restaurant originally opened in 1934, and 12 years later Deborah's parents John and Betty Folio purchased it. It was called Wonder Bar after a restaurant in the Canadian Rockies pronounced "Vunduh Bar." Betty had worked there as a hostess, and when John realized it was for sale, "he bought it immediately," Deborah said. The family actually lived in the building.
