On Feb. 4, 2000, a number of political dignitaries and city officials gathered to laud the opening of a 2.4-mile stretch of the Summerlin Parkway from Town Center Drive to Anasazi Drive.
After 20 minutes of speeches praising the success of this community effort, Councilman Michael McDonald, City Manager Virginia Valentine, Mayor Oscar Goodman and others climbed into five convertible sports cars and "cruised through Summerlin."
The Regional Transportation Commission financed the $6.7 million project. It marks the first RTC road job to open this year.
The Howard Hughes Corp., which stands to gain the most from the extension, donated $8 million worth of right-a-way property to help expedite the undertaking. Las Vegas Paving was the general contractor.
The work began in March 1999 and included the construction of an interchange at Town Center Drive, with two overpasses at Town Center and one on Summerlin Parkway at Crestdale Lane.
