Lucent Technologies yesterday introduced what it said was the industry's most integrated modem chip set, one that enables 5 Kbps data transmission. The Venus modem chip set, which uses Lucent's new Vflex(R)2 technology, can facilitate videoconferencing, cellular direct connect with ETC (enhanced throughput cellular), and DSVD (digital simultaneous voice and data). "Other than traditional modem applications, this chip set also can be used in Internet appliances, set-top boxes and TVs that browse the Web," said Bob Rango, general manager of modem/multimedia applications for Lucent Technologies' Microelectronics Group. "Couple that flexibility with the integration of more functionality onto fewer chips and the result is reduced board space, power consumption and total system costs." The L56xVCS is a two-chip modem solution that includes the DSP1673 and the CSP1034AH codec (coder/decoder). The DSP1673 is designed to accommodate software upgrades to the 56 kbps technology from Lucent, so customers' investments will be protected as standards for 56 kbps technology evolve, Lucent said.
