Microsoft last week publicly committed to develop a 64-bit version of Windows NT to run on the "Merced" chip being developed by Intel Corp. and Hewlett-Packard.
Although details of the enhanced NT are sketchy, the operating system will support both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. Microsoft also will port its BackOffice line of server applications to the new platform, said Jim Allchin, senior vice president of Microsoft's desktop and business systems division in his keynote speech at NetWorld+Interop in Atlanta last week.
