On June 1, 1993, a committee of attorneys, financial executives, and accounting firm professionals (including the authors of this article), working with the American Arbitration Association, introduced a new set of rules specifically for resolving disputes between accounting firms and their clients. They created mediation and arbitration clauses that are suitable for engagement letters, and they published three booklets specifically dealing with the use of ADR to resolve these types of disputes. Many of the examples in the article "Using ADR Clauses in Consulting Services Engagement Letters" are from Drafting Dispute Resolution Clauses for Professional Accounting and Related Services Disputes-American Arbitration Association, 1993. The rules are also published in a booklet titled "Arbitration Rules for Professional Accounting and Related Service Disputes."
