The nursing shortage is good news for Automating Peripherals Inc., a Hartford company that developed and sells software that helps hospitals set schedules in their understaffed nursing units.
The firm's product, called Active Staffer, has been on the market for a little more than two years. Louis Garcia, president and founder of the company, says the nation's nursing shortage is building a need for the software.
"Because of quality of care issues and staffing ratios, it's becoming more in demand," said Garcia, who is one of the company's owners.
The software is being used by 50 hospitals nationwide ranging in size from 2,000 to 20,000 employees, Garcia said.
