According to The Gray Sheet, the choice of Stephen J. Ubl as AdvaMed's president and CEO reflects board members' preference for detailed knowledge of the industry over mere political clout.
During an interview on the day Ubl's appointment was announced last month, Medtronic Chairman and CEO Art Collins characterized Ubl as a tactical thinker and a "quick study" on policy issues. He said Ubl's prior experience as executive vice president of government relations at AdvaMed ensures he will "hit the ground running" when taking the helm of the trade association, which is considered the largest association representing manufacturers of medical devices, diagnostic products, and medical information systems.
