The winner of the 1998 Consumer Plastics Product Design Award, given in honor of Glenn L Beall and sponsored by Krauss Maffei and the Product Design & Development Division, is the Aeron(TM) Chair from Herman Miller, Inc., Zeeland, Mich. A process utilizing a high degree of technological innovation through the combination and use of materials produced a chair with unique aesthetics and kinematic motion. This was accomplished by eliminating the typical fabric-covered foam cushion approach while maximizing user comfort. Similar materials of dissimilar configurations were insert molded to achieve high quality aesthetics without additional material finish treatments. Materials: AlliedSignal 30% glass-filled PET; DSM 25% glass-filled polyester copolymer; DuPont Pellicle polyester yarns. Processor: B&L Plastics, Rockford, Mich.
