NEW YORK - Despite the American Institute of CPAs shelving "Cognitor" as the name for its proposed global business designation, the association has pledged to maintain the controversial project And after adopting a new moniker, may put it up for a vote of its membership at the May Council meeting.
"Where we stand now with the name Cognitor is that folks didn't like it and we're going to explore other alternatives," said Geoff Pickard, vice president of communications for the AICPA. "The process will be starting soon and we'll have some new options in a couple months."
The AICPA Council will decide at its May meeting in Washington whether to authorize a vote of the full membership on the concept, which would require a twothirds vote to pass.
"We've gotten beaten up on XYZ, (the prototype name for Cognitor and the project) but its not like we sat around and made uninformed decisions about this," said the AICPA's president, Barry Melancon.
"This is probably the greatest decision that our profession faces. We'll either make the case, and it will go forward. Or if the members vote against it, it obviously will not go forward."
