The Alberta Electric System Operator will oversee the development and implementation of incentives to boost renewable generation in the province.
The Calgary, Alberta-based operator of the province's power grid got the nod to develop the programs as one of the first steps of the government's Climate Leadership Plan, AESO said in a March 3 statement. Under the plan, Alberta will shutter the giant coal-fired generators that meet the bulk of the province's electricity demand, with the goal of getting 30% of its power from renewables by 2030.
