Abstract

An interview with author Andrew Friedman is presented. Held biennially in Lyon, France, the Bocuse d'Or challenges 24 chefs from around the world to prepare meticulous platters of fish and meat in an effort to win a golden statuette of legendary French chef Paul Bocuse. Despite the competition's prestige abroad-particularly in Europe, where it is broadcast widely-the competition only recently has attracted high-profile attention in the United States. In his book "Knives at Dawn: America's Quest for Culinary Glory at the Legendary Bocuse d'Or Competition" (Free Press, 2009), author Andrew Friedman chronicles the journey of the 2009 American team, led by Chef Timothy Hollingsworth and his assistant, Adina Guest (both employees of Keller's The French Laundry in Yountville, Calif.). The duo's sixth-place finish-one of the best in U.S.-contender history-has raised the bar for future American candidates.
