Choosing a college or university is often the first major decision a young adult must make. With the help of parents, persuasion from friends, and information from university officials, this decision may still remain difficult.
The Lane Report hopes the following profiles--written by each institution--will shed light on the many different educational options available in the Commonwealth. Those featured are the six private colleges in the Bluegrass Area Development District, as well as Kentucky's eight state-support universities and Lexington Community College.
ASBURY COLLEGE
Asbury College is 11 a fully-accredited, 9 Christian liberal arts institution located in Wilmore, Ky. Founded in 1890 in the Wesleyan holiness tradition, Asbury is now in its second century of preparing students to achieve personal, spiritual and professional success.
Asbury has been ranked as one of the nation's "top fifty liberal arts schools" by the National Review College Guide, and for three consecutive years has been selected to The John Templeton Foundation Honor Roll for Character Building Colleges.
Asbury College confers the bachelor of arts and bachelor of science in education degrees. More than 60 percent of the 74 full-time faculty hold an earned doctorate. Faculty members stress the integration of Christian faith in 2 majors, ranging from education and psychology to accounting and broadcast communication. The student to faculty ratio of 14:1 helps create an atmosphere conducive to personalized instruction and development.
Asbury College strives to develop the entire person--mind, body and spirit. Therefore, opportunities to learn beyond the classroom abound through an active leadership development program, service groups and other campus organizations, as well as through cultural activities and athletic programs (intercollegiate and intramural).
Students from 49 states and 15 foreign countries make up the 1,100 person enrollment. This diversity, in addition to more than 85 percent of the student body living on campus, enriches friendships at Asbury.

BEREA COLLEGE
Berea College differs from other higher education institutions in that it:
* charges no tuition,
* admits only low-income students,
* requires all students to work 10-15 hours in a college job, and
* is committed to serving a specific region-Southern Appalachia and Kentucky.
