BROOMFIELD - It's like building a small metropolis.
Anthem Colorado, one of the largest housing developments in Colorado, will hold its grand opening in October. When the Broomfield project is finished, it may well look like its own city with 3,100 homes, a high-density town center and 12 million square feet of commercial and office space as well as 865 acres of open space.
The Pulte Homes development, located off of Interstate 25 and the Northwest Parkway, comprises two major elements. Del Webb, a division of Pulte Homes, will build the 1,500 homes in Anthem Ranch for an "active adult" audience, who must be at least 55 years old. Pulte Homes will provide another 1,600 homes with a diverse range of prices in Anthem Highlands.
The developers, who have built other large retirement communities in the Sunbelt areas of Las Vegas and Phoenix, believe that 80 percent of their market already lives in Colorado.
"Our studies have shown that the vast majority of retirees don't want to move farther than 50 miles away from where they are currently living," explained Bruce Stokes, division president of Pulte Homes. "People who have lived in a community for 30 years have strong connections to it, and one of the strongest attractions is children and grandchildren. They have established roots to the social fabric of the community - friends, churches, medical relationships. Those things tend to keep people where they are."
