A student reader of Hospitality could be flying off to Jamaica on a four-month work experience programme this summer - and he or she will be the first of several in a two-year project.
Christopher J Hartley MHCIMA, general manager of the CocoLaPalm Seaside Resort at Negril, Jamaica, is inviting students on HCIMA diploma or certificate courses to apply for the all-expensespaid placement, which has the backing of CocoLaPalm's owners, the Jamaican Government and Air Jamaica. A panel appointed by the HCIMA will manage the selection process.
Applicants should not think of this as a fourmonth Caribbean holiday: the winning applicant will be Working a 40-hour week at CocoLaPalm alongside Hartley or one of his department heads. He or she will have to fit in any studies around these duties, and will also be expected to write a short monthly report on the programme for publication in Hospitality.
Hartley expects the first placement to start on 1 September this year, to be followed by another in January 2001 and another again in May 2001. The whole sequence will be repeated in 2001/2.
