Arbitron Inc. in New York was founded in 1949, and in 1960 became a subsidiary of publicly held Ceridian Corp. in Minneapolis. In March 2001, Ceridian completed a reverse spin-off of Arbitron into a public company.
Arbitron's president and CEO is Stephen B. Morris.
U.S. revenues in 2001 were $219.6 million, up 9.5% over 2000. In'01, 3.5% of total revenue, or $79. million, came from outside the United States. The growth rate excludes revenues from the RADAR service of Statistical Research Inc., acquired in July 2001.
Arbitron is an international media and marketing research firm primarily serving radio, broadcast television, cable companies, advertising agencies and advertisers in the United States, Mexico and Europe. Arbitron also provides media and marketing research services to the outdoor, magazine, newspaper and online industries.
Arbitron's core businesses are measuring local radio audiences across the United States and in Mexico; measuring network radio audience in the United States, surveying the retail, media and product patterns of local market consumers; and providing application software used for analyzing media audience and marketing information data.
The company is developing the Portable People Meter, a new technology for radio, broadcast television and cable ratings, and a service that measures the audiences to audio and video content on the Internet, commonly known as webcasts.
The company is organized into three groups: U.S. Media Services, Portable People Meter Development and Webcast Services/New Ventures.
