Autodesk CAD Overlay is one of the venerable names in raster-to-vector conversion. The software was originally developed by IST (Image Systems Technology) of Troy, New York, in the midl980s as an inexpensive alternative to the proprietary and expensive software tools generally used to convert scanned paper drawings to CAD-style vector format.
CAD Overlay became a Softdesk product in 1994, when Softdesk acquired IST, and then an Autodesk product in 1997, when Autodesk acquired Softdesk. Over the years, the bells and whistles have multiplied, but the basic principle-inter active, rather than automatic, conversion-remains the same.
Autodesk CAD Overlay 14 made its initial appearance in October 1997, and the 14.01 update followed in September 1998. Despite the minor change in the version numbers, the 14.01 update contains significant enhancements.
