Alistair Darling was instrumental in steering the UK through the turbulence of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s.
He was on the front line as banks collapsed, ushering in an era of austerity.
To his mind, many are still reeling from those economic pressures. Brexif, the election of Donald Trump as US president, and a wave of nationalist sentiment have once again put economic uncertainty underthe spotlight.
The now Lord Darling fears there is worse fo come. The man who was at 11 Downing Street between 2007 and 2010 believes there is more to fear from Brexit than the events during that most defining time of his political career.
"Back then I could see whaf needed to be done. Once you try to dislocate the relationship with the EU, political and economic consequences are impossible to quantify.
"The nature of the financial system has had a profound effect on economics, with government austerity. The political format is why you have Brexit and Trump."
