More than half a century ago, students at Rice University invented the kind of sport that makes college officials wince: a relay in which the competitors chugged beer and then hopped on bicycles and raced.
Instead of banning it, however, the university embraced it, and "Beer Bike" became a Rice tradition. This weekend teams of chuggers, cyclists, and crew members will compete in the 52nd annual running of Beer Bike.
