The Belgium government awarded the second mobile phone network license to Mobistar, a joint venture between France Telecom Mobiles International and Telinfo SA. The venture bid approximately $300 million ($9 billion Belgian francs) for the 15-year license. Mobistar will compete against Belgacom Mobile, the operator of the first licensed network in Belgium. Both networks use the global system for mobile communications (GSM) standard. Belgacom is a joint venture between AirTouch Communications and Belgacom SA, the state telecom company.
