Bob Akman, casually dressed, trim and fit, his athletic good looks belying his age, sipped coffee as he reflected on his steady rise to success as a major land developer over the past decade, obviously comfortable with the image he has created.
But, with his usual aplomb, he brushed aside any notiion that he alone has been responsible for the company's success, rather attributing it to a "team effort."
An apt turn of phrase coming from Bob, who, in his day, was one of Manitoba's premier athletes, acquiring a solid reputation as a team player on the tennis courts. Today, while his son is one of the top-rated tennis players in the country, Bob continues to apply the team philosophy, using carefully thought out strategic game plans to successfully compete in the highly competitive world of big dollar real estate.
"A. Akman & Son is a company that was built on team effort," he says with conviction, adding "no one person here is responsible for our success. We operate as a family, so no one family member can be at his best without the other."
This team approach has its roots in tradition that has been forged over six decades. It all began in the 1920s, when Bob's grandfather Aaron, a Russian immigrant and carpenter by trade, teamed up with his son Lefty. The enterprising pair weathered the depression years, and went on to concentrate on apartment construction, all the while learning and applying the skills that have made A. Akman & Son one of Winnipeg's premier land developers.
