The farms of this new decade could be more futuristic, especially as farmers trade in older tractors and other equipment for those laden with technology.
Bob Messick, president of Lancaster County-based Messick's Farm Equipment Inc., is looking forward to a good year, in which new farm technology, improving commodity prices and a rebounding economy will help sales at his family's dealership.
Bob's father, Merville, started the Mount Joy Township dealership in 1952. Today, Bob and his brother, Ken, are training the third generation to run the business. The company has a second location in Paradise Township, York County.
Q: What have tractor sales been like over the past two years?
A: Sales have been down. Dairy prices have been low. Lack of confidence in the economy is some of it. Two years ago, the low commodity prices were part of it. But things are starting to improve. The thing that has helped sell new...
