For the fifth year in a row, online lender BofI Holding Inc. ranks as the top-performing public thrift.
In the calendar-year 2016 ranking, the gap between BofI and perennial runner-up Hingham Institution for Savings in Hingham, Mass., remained sizable, but narrowed relative to 2015.
The 2016 S&P Global Market Intelligence ranking was based on an analysis of the 50 largest public thrifts by total assets as of Dec. 31, 2016. Only companies that trade on a major exchange -- Nasdaq, NYSE or NYSE MKT -- were included.
The six financial metrics used to determine the scores were the thrifts' return on average assets (ROAA), return on average tangible common equity (ROATCE), efficiency ratio, median three-year growth rate in tangible book value (TBV) per share, nonperforming loans-to-total loans (NPLs/loans) and net charge-offs to average loans (NCOs/average loans).
