Lawrence Smyth, the former head of BP in Colombia, has been appointed as president of Russian oil company Sidanco effective Sep. 1, replacing Robert Sheppard.
Sidanco, in which BP has a 25% stake and management control, is a testing ground for foreign investment in Russia, and has assumed greater importance as other local companies court Western investors. Yukos, Sibneft, and Tyumen Oil Co. (TNK) have all said they would like to sell shares to Western companies.
