Modems
The first broadband satellite modems are starting to rear their ugly heads. Harmonic Data Systems is launching SatBox, an external satellite receiver that delivers high-speed Internet connections to PCs through a USB port. The modems are designed to support future renditions of digital TV reception over the PC, which allows the viewer to surf the 'Net simultaneously. Download speeds are reported at up to 7.5Mbps; return path goes through either phone line or other WAN connection. Shipments are expected this July. Australia's 2nd largest pay TV provider Austar will use the boxes and HDS' CyberStream end-to-end high- speed data system to offer the service to its customers. - DOCSIS modem shipments in Q1 outpaced shipments of proprietary products for the first time, according to Cable Datacom News.
