Browning Investments Inc. has snagged one of Indianapolis' most sought after office tenants -- the law firm of Baker & Daniels -- to occupy a new $50 million, 28-story office tower to be built beginning this September at the northwest corner of Meridian and New York streets.
Baker & Daniels is expected to eventually occupy roughly 100,000 square feet, or more than one-third, of the available office space in the tower. The law firm is the city's second-largest and counts Browning Investments among its major clients.
Baker & Daniels, which is housed now in the Fletcher Trust Building at 108 N. Pennsylvania St., began its search for new space in 1984. Because of its large space requirements, Baker & Daniels was a prime target of real estate developers seeking to fill new buildings.
Speculation had centered around the firm's moving into a 48-story office tower being developed for Bank One, Indianapolis (formerly American Fletcher National Bank) at Ohio and Meridian streets. Bank One also is a major client of Baker & Daniels and was the law firm's landlord before the bank sold the Fletcher Trust Building to Columbus, Ohio-based John W.
