Choice summer jobs for first- and second-year law students will be a little harder to come by in St. Louis this year.
Four of the five largest St. Louis law firms are following a national trend they hired fewer interns in 2002 than in 2001 and are planning to hire even fewer interns in 2003. Since the size of a firm's associate class often is linked to the number of summer interns, the drop could mean fewer associates will be hired.
Thompson Coburn, Armstrong Teasdale, Bryan Cave and Lewis, Rice & Fingersh have dropped the number of summer interns hired by one to eight interns a year. Husch & Eppenberger, ranked as the area's fourth-largest law firm by the St. Louis Business Journal, had its largest intern class in 2002, and plans to keep the numbers steady. However, slightly fewer interns may receive job offers when they graduate.
