EL CAJON - Perhaps it was inevitable. The owners of Buck Knives Inc. had long considered whether to move out of San Diego County, and on Jan. 14, they made their decision.
The manufacturer of cutlery, pocket knives, and hunting knives, currently based in El Cajon, will move to Post Falls, Idaho, by the end of 2004. C.J. Buck, president and chief executive officer of the family-owned company, cited the high cost of doing business locally as the "No. 1 reason" for the move.
East County Chamber of Commerce President Terry Saverson said Buck Knives' decision is a "wake-up call." Small-business owners need to let the state Legislature know how dire the situation is, she said.
"There are stumbling blocks to doing business in California, and Southern California especially, and we need to stand up and be heard," she said. "I think that's how you're going to see it playing out, the fact that Buck Knives is leaving."
