Healthpac Computer Systems, Inc., a Savannah software developer specializing in the health care industry, is a prime example of a small company whose grasp is equal to its reach. Founded in 1981 by software designer Buddy Claborn and now employing eight people, Healthpac serves 800 health care providers in 22 states -- from Florida and Connecticut to Washington state and Alaska. And because of its engineering talent and ability to service its systems over standard phone lines, the company is well-positioned to help a growing list of clients not only manage the mountain of paperwork now unavoidable in health care practice but to navigate the turbulent waters of health care reform.
Healthpac develops, sells, and supports billing and management software for health care providers, including physicians in private practice, managed care facilities, and medical service bureaus, which handle back-office accounting activities for private practitioners. The company prides itself on the breadth of its services. "We not only develop and sell our software," notes Buddy Claborn. "We install it, continually customize it to a client's changing needs, and when necessary, diagnose problems and repair them -- all from our office here in Savannah using phone lines and modems." Healthpac's software, Pac Plus, operates on both IBM PC-based platforms as well as more powerful RISC-based platforms.
Pac Plus simplifies many of the administrative burdens of a contemporary health care practice -- creating and updating patient files, preparing insurance claims (including electronic claims filing), preparing patient statements, and managing accounts receivable.
