Adelphia is moving forward with an aggressive cable modem deployment schedule while other major MSOs like Time Warner and TCI are holding back on new rollouts. Following 2-way Power Link modem deployments in Buffalo, NY, Toms River, NJ and Pittsburgh and Coudersport, PA, tomorrow Adelphia plans to install 1-way service for 45 subs in its Northern Palm Beach County, FL system using GI's SURFboard modems. While other MSOs may choose to focus on their core cable business, Adelphia said deploying cable modems now is necessary to beat the telcos' ADSL broadband technology to the punch. "We have to deploy quickly to stay ahead of the ADSL curve," said director of digital services Jorge Salinger. "By the time ADSL becomes a real product, we will be as massively deployed as possible." Within the next 3 months, Salinger said Adelphia will upgrade HFC in Buffalo to pass 65K HHs from the current 20K. One-way Power Link will be available to 400K subs in its South FL systems within the next 6 months, up from the current 125K. Though Power Link only includes email and a web browser (lacking the strong content of @Home and Road Runner), Salinger said the MSO only links a max 100 subs per node. He said this guarantees more consist 27Mbps speeds than other cable modem services, which link up to 500 subs per node.
