CALGARY: From now until the middle of July, Stampede fever will reach epidemic proportions in this city. The annual 10-day Calgary Exhibition and Stampede--July 5 to 14--transforms Calgary from a thriving, cosmopolitan centre of commerce into an anything-goes, cowboy 'n' Western frontier.
Business executives shed wool suits and oxfords for blue jeans and cowboy boots. Department stores turn checkouts into corral chutes. And hundreds of businesses will try and cash in on "the greatest outdoor show on earth."
The Calgary Convention & Visitors Bureau estimates that from 1.1 million to 1.2 million people will attend the Stampede, spending more than $118 million in and around the city. Ted Jeal, the Stampede's advertising manager, says the event will reach another 70 million people around the world via television coverage.
