Metal fabricator Barnwell got so annoyed at styrofoam and insulated beverage holders that merely slowed the warming process that he decided to turn inventor.
Barnwell was after something that actually kept a beer--or whatever--cold, for a reasonable drinking time. With friend and packaging salesman Ross Cruickshank, he devised a prototype with an inner ice pack and found to his delight it didn't just keep things cold, it made them colder. A patent search proved this would be a true first, and with the assistance of L.A. plastics company Mecasonic, the Drink Refrigerator, now simply "The Fridge" made its appearance.
