Carla D. Hayden, director of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, has been elected 2003-2004 ALA president. Hayden received 6,104 of 10,123 votes cast and will serve one year as vice-president/president-elect before she takes office at the end of the ALA Annual Conference in Toronto in July 2003.
The fourth African American to hold the Association's highest office since its founding in 1876, Hayden told American Libraries in a campaign statement (AL, Mar., p. 68) that "there is still a pressing need for more people of underrepresented groups in the information professions," and "we need to increase the visibility of our profession as an attractive and exciting career choice."
Prior to going to Baltimore in 1993, Hayden served as first deputy commissioner and chief librarian of the Chicago Public Library and assistant professor in the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh. She earned a master's degree and doctorate from the Graduate Library School of the University of Chicago.
