11:17 p.m. July 23 - The University of Alabama System board of trustees unanimously elected Carol Z. Garrison, acting president of the University of Louisville, as the sixth president of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Garrison, a UAB graduate and former faculty member, succeeds Malcolm Portera, chancellor of the three-campus system, who has served as interim president of the city's largest employer since the June 1 retirement of W. Ann Reynolds.
"Dr. Garrison is, by every measure, a perfect fit for UAB," says trustee John R. Thomas, who chaired the search committee and led final interviews with Garrison on July 22. "She is an innovator, a collaborator and a visionary administrator."
