The Certified General Accountants Association of Canada's board and its affilia- tion council - with representation from the provinces - have both endorsed merging with the Char- tered Professional Accountants of Canada. But whether that actually comes to pass awaits the verdict of CGA-Canada members.
A CGA-Canada bylaw requires that two-thirds of the association's membership ratify any merger. As reported previously in The Bottom Line, CGA-Canada tried to remove that requirement in favour of giving its board authority to make the deci- sion. But that proposal was defeated in a proxy vote at a special meeting held in mid-August. Strong oppos- ition was mounted by CGA Ontario and CGA Manitoba, the only remaining major Canadian organiza- tions not already part of, or com- mitted to CPA Canada.
