Silicon Valley- Chameleon Systems Inc. today will join a growing throng of chip suppliers clawing for position in the fledgling programmable-network-processor market.
Using what it calls a programmable system-on-a-chip processor family, Chameleon will take on traditional FPGA,ASIC, and microprocessor designs, which are reaching the end of their ability to address next-generation networking requirements, according to the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based start-up.
Armed with its SOC approach, Chameleon aims to alleviate the trade-offs system designers must now make between hardware performance and software flexibility, according to Chuck Fox, the company's president and chief executive. "There's a gaping hole in the market for the kind of platform we're addressing," Fox said.
