CheckFree {CKFR} went public a year ago. Employees: 1,200, including ISC. Transactions: 19.5 million, worth $4.3 billion in the quarter ending June, 1996. Customers: Including ISC, CheckFree will be processing transactions for about 180 banks. About 84 banks are live. Products: Payment processing for consumers, banks and merchants; software interfaces for home banking and bill payment; home banking and bill pay front-end software. Recent News: May be moving headquarters to Atlanta, where Kight has been stationed since the acquisition of Servantis Systems. Background: Kight founded CheckFree in his grandmother's basement in Worthington, Ohio. Kight worked to convince banks that customers would accept the idea of directly debiting bills, such as rent and health club dues from their checking accounts. It now facilitates direct debiting for utility companies and more than 80 percent of the country's private health clubs, Kight says. Philosophy: Kight founded CheckFree because he did not want to work for a company slowed by internal politics. At CheckFree, employees that participate in politics or attempt to build fiefdoms are warned once and fired the second time, Kight tells us. Employees are expected to report managers' political shenanigans, Kight says. Source: RDSN
