THREE HUNDRED workers struggled all last week to contain and clean up chemical spills from a massive derailment involving 34 cars ofa 113-car Union Pacific Railroad train near Eunice, La., 77 miles west of Baton Rouge, on May 27. The train was heading from Freeport, Tex., to Livonia, La., when it derailed shortly before noon.
All 113 cars in the train carried hazardous chemicals and other materials. Despite the magnitude of the accident, no deaths or injuries occurred. Within minutes of the accident, 4,100 of Eunice's 11,000 residents were ordered to...
