Heated competition for a new $50 million, 500,000 square foot plant to produce steel construction materials was won by Chemung County Last September, management of NUCOR Corporation had let it be known the company was seeking a production site somewhere in the northeast.
This summer, NUCOR Corporation (NYSE: NUE) will break ground at a 100 acre site off Exit 59 of I-86 (formerly NYS Rt.17) in the town of Chemung.
Operation of NUCOR's new plant will begin with a workforce of 300 people and capacity to fabricate 80,000 tons of steel joists and girders plus 65,000 tons of steel deck. With a 40 percent share of the domestic market, NUCOR is the nation's largest producer of steel joists and girders.
