After 34 previous shows dating back to 1972, the Textile Machinery Society of Japan moved its Research Symposium from Mount Fuji, Japan, to Hangzhou, China. This recognizes the shift in production of textiles and apparel between the countries, reports Vicky Sung.
Organized by the Textile Science Research Group of the Textile Machinery Society of Japan, The Textile Research Symposium began in 1972 and had since then, in 34 editions, taken place at Mount Fuji, Japan, becoming commonly known as the Mount Fuji Symposium. However, in August 2006, for the first time, the Symposium was held outside of Japan, at the campus of Zhejiang Sci-Tech University (ZSTU) in Hangzhou, China.
Production of textiles and apparel has shifted from Japan to China. Today, more than 80% of Japan's imported apparel is sourced from China, and so textile science and technology, and trade links between the countries have become strong.
Hence, moving the Symposium's venue to China seemed a logical step. Moreover, ZSTU enjoys a good reputation for its research in textile science and advanced materials, including:
* functional fibres and new fibre materials;
* silk science and the biosynthesise of materials;
* modern textile principles and digital textile technology;
* new textile products; and
* technical textile products.
To assist with the move to a new venue, the Textile Machinery Society of Japan cooperated with the Zhejiang Society of Textile Engineering, and the Economics and Trade Commission of Zhejiang Province.
BROAD RANGE OF COVERAGE
Research topics covered at the Symposium ranged from fibres, yarns, textiles (wovens and nonwovens) and clothing, as well as aspects of marketing and management. Some 76 oral presentations were delivered in parallel sessions and 62 posters were displayed. On the first day, ten sessions were held and on the second day, sixteen. A third day was devoted to factory visits and the fourth to a tour of the famous Silk Museum and the West Lake.
Scientific papers were grouped in ten major topics:

* Surface Modification, Finishing & Dyeing (four sessions);
* Composites and Industrial Textiles (two sessions);
* Sanitary and Hygiene Textiles (two sessions);
