John Castro says he was raised by parents who exposed him to many cultures' cuisines through their extensive travels, as well as through their practice of entertaining two to three times per week.
As a result of learning to cook at a young age, often for his parents' guests, Castro, executive chef at Winston's Restaurant at Sullivan University, says he knew early on that he would end up working in the culinary field.
Castro's brother, Joe Castro, also has followed the culinary path and is executive chef at The English Grill at The Brown - A Camberley Hotel.
John Castro graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., in 1985, then studied cooking for two years in Taiwan. He has worked in several upscale restaurants, including the Lai Lai Sheraton in Taipei, Taiwan, and Hasenour's, formerly located on Barret .Avenue in Louisville.
