Since our review of the new Canon LBP - BX 600 x 600 dpi A3 format (11x17 in.) laser printer (Canadian Printer, November 1992), a number of controller board and system manufacturers have released their own hardware and software versions which are marketed as complete products bearing their own brand names.
Readers who attended the Print Ontario '92 show in Toronto saw the CalComp model CCL600 PostScript laser printer demonstrated at the CalComp booth.
CalComp has taken a different approach in the use of a special Intel processor which has been configured to drive the BX at 600 x 600 dpi resolution using only 2 mega - bytes of RAM as opposed to the minimum 12 MB of RAM used on most other makes. Price is a very competitive $4,995.
The CCL600 accepts input through AppleTalk, RS232/422 serial, Centronics Parallel and has a plug for an optional SCSI disk. On the other hand, Xante is loading its BX offering with up to 48MB of RAM for 1200 dpi, 32MB of RAM for 960 dpi, 20MB of RAM for 800 dpi, down to 12MB of RAM for its lowest cost 600 dpi printer which sells for $4,995.
