Central Marine Design Bureau (CMDB) "ALMAZ" played and still plays a leading role in development of various types of fast speed vessels of small and medium displacement. Since its founding in 1949, "ALMAZ" has been working simultaneously in the following directions: 1) FAC's-missile and corvettes; 2) air-cushion landing craft (amphibious and SES); 3) patrol boats and ships. The President of CMDB "ALMAZ" Alexander V. Shliakhtenko tells our readers about design features and present-day trends of application of ships and vessels of this class.
Fast speed boats or ships, being quite small-sized, are most power-dense seagoing vessels. They are equipped with highly sophisticated propulsion, automatic ship control systems, navigation and communication systems, different kinds of armament and sensors. All these attributes make them hi-tech units which reflect achievements of modern science and technology. A high operational performance of a ship should be constant during the whole time of service (20-25 years). It makes prognostication of development of science and technology on which a produced object is based even more important.
For 55 years of working "ALMAZ" together with leading Russian scientific research institutes has created different hydrodynamic types of small boats and ships of various classes, functions, dimensions and structural systems.
